Abstract

Fatma Latifa Laily. Cohesion and Coherence in Students’ Writing. A Study at the third semester students of English Departement FKIP Mataram University. Thesis. Bachelor Degree in English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educaation of Mataram University. Advisor: (1) Prof. Drs. Mahyuni, M.A, Ph.D. (2) Dr Amrullah, M.Pd. This study aims to identify and describe the common error in writing using cohesive devices by the third semester students of English Department and the factors affecting them error in writing using cohesive devices. The current study was employed qualitative descriptive approach. The sample of this study was 30 students, which taken from 3 classes (A, B, C) using purposive random sampling technique. To gather the data, collecting students’ writing task was conducted as the main data to identify and describe the common error in using cohesive devices and questionnaire was given to collect the factors affecting students’ error in cohesive devices. And the result of analysis indicates that reference was the common error with the percentage 44% and followed by lexical cohesion 29% and conjunction 27%. In addition, students’ writing proficiency and the limited knowledge of cohesive devices knowledge were claimed as the factors affecting students’ error in using cohesive device
