Abstract

This thesis was aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative texts and the root causes that contributes in students’ difficulties which were faced by the eleventh grade students of MA DI Putri Nurul Hakim Kediri in academic year 2017/2018. This study is a case study research which was conducted at MA DI Putri Nurul Hakim Kediri. The population of the study was all of the eleventh grade students. The sample of the study was class XI IPA 3 which consist of 31 students, where the writer took all of the population as the sample, this method sampling was called purposive random sampling. In collecting the data, three kinds of instruments were used by the writer, those are narrative reading tests which was adopted from Praja (2016), questionnaire which was adopted from Panji (2011), and interview. The result of students’ qualification of the first test were; (1) 1 student was qualified as very good (3.22%), (2) none of the students was qualified as good (0%), (3) 5 students were qualified as satisfied (16.12%), (4) 9 students were qualified as poor (29.03%), and (5) 16 students were qualified as very poor (51.61%). Meanwhile, students’ qualification of the second test were (1) 3 student was qualified as very good (9.67%), (2) 3 students was qualified as good (9.67%), (3) 7 students were qualified as satisfied (22.58%), (4) 5 students were qualified as poor (16.12%), and (5) 13 students were qualified as very poor (41.93%). From the percentages, it was concluded that most of studentswas still difficult to comprehend narrative texts. In conclusion,the ability in comprehending narrative texts at the eleventh grade students of MA DI Putri Nurul Hakim Kedirican be classified as poor category. The results of questionnaire and interview presented the root causes of students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text, such as:limited understanding of vocabulary, and have limited understandingin grammatical knowledge. In addition, the teacher explanation was also affecting students motivation in learning English and the local dialect that influenced the teacher’s performance.
