Abstract

The study is aimed to find out the types of grammatical error, the most dominant type of grammatical errors and the factor which contribute to the grammar errors in students‟ writing composition in English Education Program at FKIP of Mataram University in Academic Year 2016-2017. This study used Qualitative descriptive method, where the data of the analysis is descriptive. The population of this study was the students in English academic writing class at English education program of FKIP Mataram University. Furthermore, simple random sampling technique was used in choosing the sample study. The number of students of this research is 53 students. In the research finding there are five types of grammatical errors found in students writing, those are; sentence structure with 62 errors, subject verb agreement with 61 errors, word order with 21 errors, word choice with 160 errors, and connecting word with 37 errors. The type of grammar which has the highest percentage is word choice with 46.93%, followed by sentence structure error with 18.19% and subject verb agreement with 17.88%, then connecting word with 10.85%. The lowest number of error is word order with 6.15%. The number of word choice errors found in students writing is 160 errors from 341 errors. The factor that contributes to the grammatical errors based on students‟ response in the questionnaire is translation, where most of the students are translating from Indonesian language to English language when producing English writing.
