Abstract

This thesis entitled “the use of pictures in teaching descriptive writing: an experimental study at the second grade students of MTSN Jonggat in academic year 2016-2017” is aimed at increasing students’ ability in descriptive writing text at MTSN Jonggat in Central Lombok. This research is experimental research with one group was experimented that is experimental groups. The sample inclusively the objects of the study was class VIII F at second grade students of MTSN Jonggat which consists of 32 students. This research applied experimental study with pre-test and post-test design. The class was selected by using simple random sampling technique. The data collected was from the result of pre-test and post-test. In conducting the research, experimental group was taught by pictures in writing descriptive text. The result of data collected shown that the mean score gained by the samples in the post-test was higher than the pre-test 60.62 and 47.34. In addition, the score of t- obs was 5.40 and the value of t – table was 2.040 at the confidence level .05(95%) and 2.744 at the confidence level .01(99%) in degree of freedom (df) 31. It means that the value of t-obs was higher than ttable. Thus, it proves that using pictures is effective in increasing students’ writing descriptive text
