Abstract

This thesis is aimed analyzing the intrinsic elements of “ The Old Man and The Sea”. It focuses on setting and motivation of the main character. The data were gathered through internet, library research and the novel itself. The method used in this thesis is the objective approach. This approach only focuses on the intrinsic elements of the novelette. The research investigated the intrinsic element, setting and the motivation of the main character by clarifying and analyzing them. And the data analysis is conducted in defining the main character motivation. The results would show the influence of setting towards Santiago’s motivation to struggle out to the sea. It is found that the data are showed the significant contribution of setting in influencing the main character motivation in the story. The settings that can be found in the story are setting of place, setting of time and setting of the society. This thesis concluded that the setting of the story influenced the main character motivation. n and struggle.
