Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of using Repetition, Comprehension Check and Gestures (RCCG) technique in mastering vocabulary at VIII grade students of SMPN 1 Kediri Academic year 2015/2016. This study focuses on mastery of vocabulary and retention of vocabulary. The 48 students of 156 were taken using purposive random sampling as samples (VIII B as the experimental group and VIII C as the control group). The data were collected through pre-test, treatments and two post-tests. For the treatment, both groups were treated differently. The experimental was treated with RCCG technique and the control group was treated with Visual learning. The results of the tests (pretest and post test) performed by the experimental and control group showed the mean score of both groups were increased from 27.9 to 70.2 and 24.3 to 57.0 respectively. The students in experimental group performed higher with range (42.3) than those in the control group with range (32.7). Furthermore, the value of the t-test 3.1 was higher than the t-table at the confidence level of .05 (95%) with 2.0129 and.01 (99%) with (2.6870) which mean H was rejected. As the conclusion, there was significant effect on the use of RCCG technique in mastering vocabulary at VIII grade students of SMPN 1 Kediri academic year 2015/2016. And the results of the tests (immediate and delayed test) performed by experimental group and control group were equal decreasing, from 70.2 to 70.1 and 57.0 to 56.5 respectively. However RCCG is slightly better in helping the students to recall vocabulary than the visual learning technique. It means neither the RCCG technique nor Visual learning give effect on the students’ retention of vocabulary. However, the result of t-test score (0.40) is lower than t-table value at confidence level of .05 (95%) with 2.0129 which mean the use of RCCG technique did not give significant effect on the retention of vocabulary.
