Abstract

Background: Communication is one of the competencies that must be mastered by doctors. It is known that the good information-gathering techniques will enable patients to acquire satisfaction with medical services. Patients’ understanding of certain medical information is often to be different from what was meant to be delivered by the doctors. Therefore, this research aims to determine factors affecting patients’ level of understanding of ENT department in West Nusa Tenggara Provincial General Hospital. Methods: A total of 52 outpatients in ENT department of West Nusa Tenggara General Hospital who have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected based on consecutive sampling technique. Data collection are conducted by using questionnaire. Statistical analysis uses descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis uses chi square method, and multivariate analysis uses logistic regression test to examine the strength of each risk factor. Results: As many as 35 people (67.3%) of outpatients in ENT department of West Nusa Tenggara General hospital have a good level of understanding and 17 people (32.7%) of outpatients have a poor level of understanding. This research shows that there are two factors that influence the understanding level of medical information (p<0.05): doctors and environmental factors.
