Abstract
This thesis is intended to describe the students‟ competency in recognizing and constructing the NPs in narrative text. The research was conducted in the sixth semester students of English Department FKIP Mataram University in academic year 2016/2017 with 109 students as the population. Of those populations, 28 students involved as sample selected using cluster random sampling. This research used descriptive quantitative method, the data which were collected through tests. This research shows that sixth semester students of English Department FKIP Mataram University were able to recognize and construct the Nps in narrative text, it is proven by the percentage of the mean score of the students; 53,2% of the students are able to recognize the Nps with “FAIR” grade and 69% of the students are able to construct the Nps in narrative text with “GOOD” grade. The result shows that the students also made errors/ mistakes; ommision error (determiner (article) and head (noun)), and misordering (pre-modifier (adjective), and postmodifier (prepositional phrase)).
