Abstract

This research aims to find out the level of the students’ difficulties in using Request and Wh-Question, and the factors that may contribute to the students’ difficulties in using Request and Wh-Question. Population of this research include especially the first grade students of SMKN 1 Mataram who are divided into 7 classes comprising 300 students. The writer used random technique and take 10% of those students conform 30 students. The writer used descriptive method in this research. In this research, the writer used two instruments, objective test and questionnaire. The students’ level of ability in using Request and Wh-Question above, the writer can classify that the ability of the first grade students of SMKN 1 Mataram in using Request and Wh-Question is fairly satisfactory. To obtain the causes of the students’ difficulties in using request and wh-question, the writer first found the difficulties in questionnaire and multiple choice tests. The cause of the difficulties in using request and wh-question is presentated as follow: (1) Do not know about some formulas of politeness in request, (2) Do not understand about structure/formula, (3) Do not know about kinds of request, (4) Can not distinguish between Request and Wh-Question, (5) Do not understand about the context of sentence, (6) The students’ vocabulary mastery is low. Some factors that may contribute to the students’ difficulties in using request and wh-question. They were caused by several factors: There is not medium that support the students to study request and wh-question, the students did not understand the teacher’s explaination, their motivation in learning english subject is low, the differences between the rules of the mother tongue and the foreign language, these student’s intake is low to understand the material of request and wh-question (formula, kinds and structure), the students can not distinguish between request and wh-question, the students do not understand about context of sentences, and their vocabulary mastery is low/poor.
