Abstract

The purpose of this study is not only to show the types and meanings of emoticons that commonly occurs in chat room interaction but also to describe the differences of Eastern and Western Emoticons in Cyberspace chat room interaction. For the whole contents of the research, there were three of six basic human facial expressions that are classified and explained in this study; happy, sad and surprise. This study used descriptive qualitative and comparative method. This study also described each icon that vice each expression. The data in this study are gained through note taking method in which the researcher uses two kinds of observations; participatory and voluntary participation to get the softcopy of the data to be analyzed. This thesis is written mainly to give a clear description and analysis of the types and meanings of emoticons that commonly occur in chat room interaction whether it is in Yahoo Messanger or in Facebook chat room and how the users interprete them. It is also written to analyze the differences between Eastern and Western emoticons. The results gained from this study are (1) the dominant types of emoticons that occured are happy, sad and surprise icons. They can replace the sentences or words to interprate the ideas of the message that users want to delivere. (2) Emoticons are derived from the characteristics of the tuts keyboard in computer to imitate human face to support the idea of the message. (3) Eastern and Western emoticons are definitely different, the differences can be seen that the western emoticons are read sideways or read horizontally, while eastern are vertical or read upright and the eastern emoticons focus on eyes to represent the mood of facial expression while mouth is very contrast for western emoticons. Those are based on their culture.
