Abstract

The aim of the present study is to identify the effect of portfolio assessment to the improvement of students’ reading comprehension. The data were collected through experimental method. The population was 210 first year students of SMAN 1 Selong. Sixty (60) students were randomly selected as the sample which was divided into experimental group (50%) and the rest as the control group. Data were collected through observation of students’ learning performances during the treatment and the result of pre-test and post-test. The data were later analyzed with t-test formula. It was found that the application of portfolio assessment was able to improve students’ reading comprehension and their learning performances. This continuous progress was shown during the treatment where the number of students who were able to identify the main idea of reading materials which consisted of narration, description, announcement, advertisement, report and procedural text increased on each meeting. In first day of treatment, 63% students could identify the main idea of a narration, in the next meeting, 69% students were able to identify the main idea of a description and those who could identify the main idea of announcement and advertisement were 72% students. In the last meeting, 72% students were able to identify the main idea of a report text and 79% students were able to identify the main idea of a procedural text. On the contrary, the reading comprehension of students in control group with non-portfolio showed an unstable progress where 67% students were able to identify the main idea of a narrative text and transform the text into a conversational text, in the next meeting, 63% students were capable to identify the main idea of descriptive text, and 70% students could identify the main idea of announcement and advertisement. In the last meeting, 67% students were able to identify the main idea of a report text and the 77% students were able to identify the main idea of a procedural text. Moreover, the result of statistical analysis of pre-test and post-test shows that t-test (3.539) t-table at the confidence level .05 (95%) and .01 (99%) with degree of freedom 58 or 60. It can be concluded that the application of portfolio assessment was able to improve students’ reading comprehension.
