Abstract

This study focused on construction of speakers’ identity in religious speech on Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakims’ speeches and it is aimed at: a). Describing the identities that is constructed Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakims’ speeches; b). Describing linguistics resources that occur in Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakims’ speeches; c). Describing the mechanism used by Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakim in negotiate his identity in delivering religious speeches. Some of religious speech of Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakim have been token as the data, while 10 of religious speech obtained are chosen as the population than from them had been chosen 3 as the representative samples using non-probably technique. Methodology employed in this study was qualitative method. The findings showed that the identities of Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakim construct his language in delivering religious speech. Those of identities are religious identity, leader/teacher and social identity. The researcher also found linguistics resources in those speeches such as code-switching, direct speech and indirect speech. In negotiate his identity Tuan Guru Haji Shafwan Hakim used exclusion and inclusion style.
