Abstract

This thesis is a descriptive study about EXAMINING GRICE’S MAXIM ON THE DRAGQUEEN LANGUAGE, a case study in Bima “at three Beauty Shops in Bima and Amahami as their home base. This research is aimed at examining whether the dragqueen language obey the cooperative principle by Grice or not based on four maxims and also its condition where those principles are disobeyed. The four maxims are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner and maxim of relevant. This research was done in Bima, at 3 salons (Levan salon, Ririn salon and Henny salon) and at Amahami as their home base. The population of this research was the dragqueen community and normal people who understand their language. They were 11 draqueens and 3 normal people. The data were collected by recording the natural conversation between them by using tape recorder, and transcribe the conversation in to written text to anticipate possibility of damage in recording. To support the data that has been collected, the author also retrieved data from related books and the internet containing the conversation and regular pliers vocabulary used in the language. The result of this research showed that the dragqueen language almost never obey the maxims proposed by Grice. They tend to make more fault in their conversation if it was related to the Grice’s principles. As The writer concluded, there were several reasons of disobeying the maxims proposed by Grice; To tell something clearly; to emphasize something important or stress something; to show the feelings such as happiness, sadness, etc; because of they are blabber mouth persons, so the information that they convey is often more than is required. (the maxim of quantity); To hide something by telling everything that they know without taking care of truthfulness.(the maxim of quality); To save face, to avoid talking about something, consciously, they talk about something which out of the topic.(the maxim of relevance); and To get attention (the maxim of manner). And finally, the writer expect that the future research could be conducted by enlarging the population as well the samples or dragqueen community members.
