Abstract

This study serves two fold purposes. In one it deals with the types and forms of demonstratives in Tebao based on Diessel’s categorizations-syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features- as well as Dixon’s categorization and in the other it deals with the structural distributions of velar nasal ng which is tightly related to the referring system of the demonstratives. The method used in this study is descriptive method. The population of this study are all dialogues, sentences and utterances spoken the natives speakers of Menu Meni dialect in Tebao and all forms of demonstratives become samples of this study. The data in this study are from the native speakers of Tebao which are collected through data introspecting, recording and note taking. It is then analyzed by classifying and identifying the demonstratives and to get the validity of the data, the researcher crosschecks to the other native speakers and then the researcher formulates and explains the types and forms of Tebao demonstratives. Based on the analysis, the velar nasal ng functions as prefix, linker, and pronominal clitic. Tebao demonstratives are included in all Diessel’s classification as well as Dixon’s classification. In semantic level, Tebao demonstratives serve three way distinctions – proximal (ning/niqng), medial (tieng/tieqng) and distal (nung/nuqng). In syntactic level, Tebao demonstratives are divided into five major types of demonstratives: adnominal demonstratives, pronominal demonstratives, identificational demonstratives, adverbial demonstratives and verbal demonstratives. In Referring system, Tebao demonstratives can mostly be used in ‘familiar and ‘activated’. In ‘familiar’, the form niqng/tieqng/nuqng is often used to encode ‘familiar’ while another form ning/tieng/nung is felicitous for ‘activated’ since using this form, the referent may be visible in the speech situation. As suggestion, the researcher expects that there will be more study
