Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the problems in teaching and learning English at Kindergarten. Thus, this study was focused on finding the descriptive features of teaching and learning English in kindergarten that has relevant with National curriculum, the problems faced by both of the teachers and students in teaching and learning English at Kindergarten of Budi Luhur School. In addition, it was also intended to investigate the teachers’ strategies for solving those problems. The population of this research was all of Kindergarten students and their parents, also English teachers of Budi Luhur School Mataram. The total sample used was 80 people. The data for the study were gathered through observation, questionnaires, interview and English test. The method that was used in this research was descriptive. The study found out the following results: (1) The teaching and learning English in Budi Luhur School is following the National Curriculum. This can be seen from the application of syllabus according with the Curriculum, also the implementation of approach and assessment according to themes. The teacher as a centre of study in case, the talk in the classroom is still dominated by the teacher, it was found that a teacher talks (TT) was between 70-80% in classroom (2) The problems faced by the students in English are the difficulties in practicing daily English conversation, the difficulty in memorizing English vocabulary in particular, also difficulty in spelling and pronouncing English word, difficulty in doing English homework, and difficulty in understanding the material. (3) The teacher’s strategies are classified into two aspects: The aspect of teaching and learning English process, Teaching strategy and build up a good relationship between teachers and parents, and the aspect of English material.
