Abstract

Teaching and learning activities does not always go as planned. There are several things that cause the learning process to be passive. One of which is due to inappropriate learning strategies. This study aims to identify the types of learning strategies developed by the first-year students of the English Language Education Program when dealing with speaking classes, to reveal types of difficulties found in the speaking class, and to uncover students' ways in coping with learning difficulties in the speaking class. 40 students were chosen randomly as the sample. The researcher used a questionnaire to survey to collect data. To support the data findings of the survey results, the researcher interviewed 5 students who were chosen purposively. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) 7.0 version questionnaire was used to assess respondents. The researcher used Microsoft Excel to analyze the percentage of data to obtain the strategies developed by students. On average, students face the same difficulties when learning to speak English, such as excessive anxiety, difficulty remembering unfamiliar words, fear of making mistakes, so on. However, based on the results of the interviews, students have a variety of strategies for dealing with these difficulties they encounter in speaking classes.
