Abstract
The aim of the study was to explore the students’ ability in constructing claims and rebuttals in argumentative writing a University of Matram. The research utilized a mixed-method approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data. The sample size consisted of 76 participants from A, E, F classes in the 3rd semester argumentative writing class. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze the quantitative data, while the qualitative data was analyzed through a three-stage process. The results showed that the majority of students demonstrated strong abilities in constructing claims, with 36% classified as having excellent skills. However, in regards to constructing rebuttals, 51% were found to have low abilities. The qualitative analysis revealed that students faced challenges such as linguistic problems, including a limited vocabulary and difficulties in proper grammar use, syntactical errors, and limited knowledge about the content of their writing
