Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the types of code switching in EFL classroom, the reason why the teacher switches his language and at what level the teacher mostly uses code switching in the classroom whether they are words, phrases or sentences and the dominant type used. It was descriptive qualitative method. For gaining the data, the researcher used recording tool to record the teacher utterances. Those data were then analyzed the use of Poplack’s (1980) and Hoffman’s (1991).The result shows 60 data of Code Switching uttered by the teacher. There were found three types of code switching. From those data, IntraSentential switching is the most frequently used, followed by Inter-sentential Switching, and the last tag switching which rarely used by the teacher. Moreover, in terms of reasons they are vary such as talking about particular topic, being emphatic for something, interjection, and repetition used for clarification. Interestingly, the other reason quoting someone’s speech was not found in the data. Furthermore, the teacher did the most code switching at the sentences level followed by phrase level and the least at the words level.
