Abstract

Jangkok river is a very strategic river which has been very pivotal in the development of agriculture in Lombok island. Therefore its function must be preserved in a way that regular monitoring of its condition must be carried out. High sediment transportation rates in the upper course of Jangkok river are particularly important to observe as it contributes to the degrading condition of the river. In this research an extensive measurement of sediment was arranged to observe the behaviour of Jangkok River and its tributary in the upper course. This was intended to develop a map containing the order of the stream based on the sediment transporting capacity. The map will allow the authority to design the operation and maintenance activities of the river as well as the corresponding catchment in a multi�stage process particularly when the budget is in a very limited state. Furthermore, the map is also beneficial as the basic information in selecting the treatment method for every river based on their characteristic stated on it. The early findings suggest that noticeable differences are found within the six rivers observed in this research. One particular river transported sediment several fold than neighbouring river. This indicates that the characteristic of rivers in term of sediment transportation can vary quite significantly within a small catchment area.
