Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate whether there was any correlation between the students‟ vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English text into Indonesian a case study at the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Labuapi in academic year 2022/2023. This study used quantitative research design by taking the samples from 4 classes of second grade students making up a total of 31 (14 males, 17 females) samples. The data were collected by conducting a vocabulary mastery test (consisting of 40 pair of words) and a translation test (20 sentences related with vocabulary mastery) and analysed using SPSS Program version 25. Pearson Correlation showed that the correlation value between students‟ vocabulary and their ability to translate English sentences into Indonesian (rxy) was 0.746, which ranged from 0.660 to 0.770. According to the interpreting table, the correlation between students‟ vocabulary ability and translation from English to Indonesian was high/strong. The result for rxy was 0.746, while the table of critical values of r-product moments (r-table) for 31 subjects at a 95% confidence level was 0.355. This means that rxy > r-table (0,746 > 0,355). Thus, this study concluded that there is a significantly strong positive correlation between students‟ vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English texts into Indonesian at second grade students of SMPN 2 Labuapi West Lombok regency in academic year 2022/2023
