Abstract

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared this situation a global pandemic (Cucinotta & Vanellli, 2020). In this global pandemic, everybody was required to self-quarantine independently in their home, and then the government made rules for societies to keep distancing with other people in public areas to dissect the spread of this kind of virus. This also has an impact on teaching and learning activities where the government requires learning activities to be carried out at home with an online learning system. Therefore, this study aims to find out the strategies for improving students' motivation toward English e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic : a study at grade 7 of SMPN 2 for the academic year 2021/2022. This research generally answers the following two questions: (1) How are students' motivations toward English e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic?(2) What are the strategies to improve students' motivation toward English e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic? Data collection was carried out through questionnaires and interviews. This study was attended by 62 seventh grade students from SMPN 2 Praya.. The results of the study found that most of the students said that learning English through e-learning was less motivating, although some students found it quite motivating. And there are several strategies for increasing student motivation in online English learning activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely: a) Improving Teacher Quality; b) Choosing the right learning methods in the pandemic era; c) Maximizing Learning Facilities in the learning process environment; d) Utilizing learning media during the pandemic; e) Conducting learning evaluations for students; f) Giving assignments to students according to their abilities; and g) Utilizing learning media that attract students' attention
