Abstract
This research aims to find out the effectiveness of using crossword puzzles on the vocabulary mastery of 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Mataram. This research was pre- experimental research with one group pre- test post- test design. The population in this study was all 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Mataram. Sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling technique with one experimental class; consist of 71 students from X IPS 1 and X IPS 3. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-test of SPSS 26 Version. Data collection was divided into three steps i.e. pre- test, treatment, and post- test. The results obtained from the data analysis shows the mean score of the pre- test was 61.2958 and after the treatment, the mean score of the post- test increased to 82.5915. Paired sample t- test was used to test the hypothesis and shows result with a significance value 0.00. The significance value obtained from data analysis was lower than the t-count on 95% confidence. Interval of difference at lower value was -22.5122 and upper value -20.0793. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the use of crossword puzzles is very effective for teaching vocabulary to students and can effectively improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
