Abstract

Listening is one of the important language skills in learning English because listening provides input and knowledge in using a language for students, especially beginner-level learners. The purposes of this study were to investigate the perceptions of English teachers in teaching listening to first-grade students of junior high schools, the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching listening, and opportunities for the teachers in teaching listening. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three English teachers, observations, and documents study. The study found several teachers' perceptions in teaching listening: the teachers, introduce listening skills as part of their learning activity even though they mostly need adjustment, introducing English at Elementary school could help students receive listening input easier in junior high, listening skills is a challenging skill for first-grade students, and the need to adjust most of their listening materials to fit the student's ability and the lack of their background knowledge in English. The study also found the challenges in teaching listening: the student's lack of background knowledge, the students’ diversity in ability, the lack of students’ concentration, the teacher's understanding of listening for first grade, the complexity of English materials textbooks and the condition of the classrooms. Meanwhile, the opportunities in teaching listening found in this study: the teacher's experience in teaching listening, the teacher's knowledge of listening theories, the learning facilities that could support listening activities provided by the teachers or school, and the teacher's creativity in English materials.
