Abstract

In learning vocabulary, video subtitles have an important role in enriching new phrases. The combination of sound and images can motivate students to achieve the goals of the learning process. Lack of vocabulary can limit students' ability to express ideas and ideas clearly and precisely. Students experience difficulties in choosing the appropriate word to convey a message or argument. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the effectiveness of English subtitled videos to improve students' vocabulary skills. The sample in this study was 20 students in class VIII SMPN 2 Bayan. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. This study used a pre-experimental method with a one group pre-test post-test design. The results showed that the level of students' vocabulary mastery after being given treatment using English subtitles was very good. The data shows that there were five students who got low/poor grades, six students got fair scores, six students got good grades and three students got very good scores. Thus, there is a significant difference in increasing vocabulary before and after being given treatment using video subtitles.
