Abstract

English vocabulary plays an important role in making students proficient in English. Students cannot read, speak, listen, or write without understanding the meaning of words. Therefore, it is essential for English teachers to employ effective methods to enhance students' vocabulary. One such method is incorporating English songs into the curriculum. This study aims to determine the effect of using English songs to teach students' vocabulary. This research is quantitative with a quasiexperimental design. The sample in this study was 40 students in the experimental and control classes. The sample is composed of class X students of SMK Negeri 2 Gerung. X-TOI as the control class and X-TEI as the experimental class The experimental class was taught using English songs, and the control class was taught using flashcards. The results showed that there were significant differences in vocabulary mastery between the two classes. After treatment, the mean scores for the post-test in the experimental class were 80.25 and 66.75 for the control class. After the researchers analyzed the data using the SPSS program, the results showed that the significant test results (2-tailed) were 0.00 <0.05. It means that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in vocabulary mastery. In addition, hypothesis testing showed that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In conclusion, the use of English Songs in teaching students vocabulary mastery was an effective to improved students’ vocabulary mastery at class X of SMK Negeri 2 Gerung in academic year 2022/2023.
