Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether SQ3R technique is effective to improve students reading ability at eight-grade students of SMPN 1 Batu Layar. This study is a quantitative research with quasi-experimental design using control and experimental groups. Total population is 78 students, by taking two class from three class using purposive sampling technique. The sample are 52 students which taken from the population; 26 students in control group and 26 students in experimental group. The data results of students pre-test and post-test as the instrument were analyzed by using SPSS. The research findings showed the result of the statistical hypothesis testing by using independent sample t-test showed that on degree of significance 5% (α=0.05), tvalue was 0.446 while ttable was 2.00. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected and the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted. This research findings did not show a significant difference in the use of SQ3R on students‟ reading ability. It can be concluded that the use of SQ3R technique does not give significant effect of reading abilities among eighthgrade students at SMPN 1 Batu Layar.
