Abstract

Speaking is a mandatory skill for students learning English. To master this skill many of these students have difficulty. In this study, the researcher discusses the problems experienced by students when learning English, especially the anxiety experienced by students when speaking. This study aims to find out the type of anxiety experienced by students, the factors that cause anxiety, and the strategies students use to overcome anxiety symptoms. This research uses qualitative research methods in the form of descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out using observation and interview methods. This study involved 11 students from two different classes at SMA NW Narmada. This study found that there are two types of anxiety in the form of trait anxiety and state anxiety. In addition, some factors cause anxiety in the form of communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. The students' strategies for overcoming anxiety experienced in the form of, relaxation, preparation, audience depreciation, and resignation. In this research, it is suggested that students practice speaking more often and increase their vocabulary. For future researchers, it is suggested to research how to create a fun environment for learning English. In this case, it can be in the form of games or music that helps students in reducing anxiety symptoms experienced by students.
