Abstract

Motor vehicle emissions contain various chemical compounds such as SOx, NOx, CO, and HC, The air pollution parameters for CO and NO2 gas are analyzed because this gas has a considerable percentage in air pollution. It certainly will disrupt human health. Based on these conditions one effort that can be done is to reduce the level of exhaust emissions by designing a vehicle produces low emissions. Activated charcoal is charcoal which has undergone a change of physical and chemical properties because it has been through the activation process so that its absorption and surface area increases. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of activated charcoal of wood rivet as adsorber at vehicle exhaust channel in reducing exhaust emission in motor vehicle and the effect of ZnCl2 concentration on the quality of activated charcoal wood in minimizing exhaust emissions of CO, CO2, and HC of motor vehicles. The results showed that activated charcoal wood can reduce emissions from CO, CO2, and HC more effectively than ordinary charcoal, An activated charcoal activator with a 12% ZnCl2 activator concentration level can reduce CO, CO2, and HC gas emissions better than charcoal activated with ZnCl2 solution at lower concentrations. Activation of charcoal with ZnCl2 with a concentration of 12% can break the bond on the carbon so that the pores of the charcoal grow larger or more so that the activated charcoal with the concentration of 12% ZnCl2 activator has a better absorbency.
