Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the use of codeswitching among intermarriage couples in Kebunsari village. Codeswitching is the use of two or more languages by speakers or communicants in the same conversation or utterance. This study seek to explore the types and the factors that motivate codeswitching in intermarriage couples speech in Kebunsari village. The data were collected from twelve respondents consisting of four intermarriage couples and four children of intermarriage couples. To collect the data the researcher uses both library and field research. In library research, the writer uses any sources such as books, journal, and internet media. Whereas in field research, the researcher uses observation, interviews, and note-taking. This study is descriptive one and in analyzing the data the writer uses qualitative techniques. According to data analysis, there are two types of codeswitching in intermarriage couples speech found. Those are intersentential codeswitching and intrasentential codeswitching. In intersentential codeswitching, switching mostly happen from Sasak to Indonesian (64.71%), followed by switching from Indonesian to Sasak (35.29%). Whereas in intrasentential codeswitching, Indonesian was the host language in almost (67.15%), compared of 31.43% Sasak and 1.42% Java as the guest languages. Only 32.85% of the intrasentential codeswitching have Sasak as the host language with 31.43% Indonesian and 1.42% Java as the guest languages. The factors that motivate codeswitching for intermarriage couples are ethnic background, social status, age, topic discussion, and interlocutors.
