Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the effect of using worksheet in teaching writing. The samples of the research are the second grade students’ of SMP N 1 Gunungsari. The samples are divided into two groups: experimental group (VIIIA) and control group (VIIIB). Each group consists of 30 students, and the total numbers of the samples are 60 students. The data is collected by using the pre-test and post-test which is given after giving treatment to the samples. The same essay test is given to both groups for the pre-test and post-test. The score of the experimental group for the pre-test (x1) is 1673 and post-test (x2) is 2108. The score of control group for the pre-test (y1) is 1610 and the post-test (y2) is 1905. The deviation score of the experimental group is 435 and that of the control group is 295. After getting the deviation score of pre-test and post-test, the mean score of two groups are computed by dividing the total number of samples. It is found that the students’ mean deviation in experimental group (14.5) is higher than that of the control group (9.8). The value of the t-test is 4.476; it is higher than the critical value of t-table at the significance level of .05 (2.0017) and .01 (2.6633) with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of worksheet is significantly effective in improving the students’ writing skill of the second grade students of SMP N 1 Gunungsari in academic year 2011/2012. Thus, the Null hypothesis (Ho) which states “Worksheet is not effective in improving the students’ writing ability in English” is rejected. Hence, the Null Hypothesis is altered into the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) which states “Worksheet is effective to improve students’ writing ability in English”.
