Abstract
The purpose of this research is to know the effect of using pictures on students’ ability in writing descriptive text in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kediri. The population of the research was the eighth grade consisting 30-35 students. The research methodology was an experiment research, which were conducted two classes, the experimental (VIII A) and the control (VIII B) as the sample. The VIII A class was taught by using pictures, while the VIII B class was not taught by using pictures. The writer gave writing test to gather the data. The data was gathered from the score of students’ pre test and post test. The technique used in analyzing the data was t-test formula. It was used to determine whether there was significance different between the experimental and control group. Moreover, the students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test showed significant improvement. The score are 28.33 for the experimental and 23.30 for the control group. The highest score of pre-test is 67, while the lowest score is 41 for experimental group. The highest score of pre-test is 56, while the lowest is 38 for control group. The t-test is higher than t-table or t-test ≥ t-table at the confidence level of 0.05 (95%) 3.82 ≥ 1.67 and 0.01 (99%) 3.82 ≥2.39. Based on the result, that is t-test (t0) ≥ t-table (tt) at the confidence level of 0.05 (95%) or 0.01 (99%) then the alternate hypothesis (Ha): “There is a significant improvement of using picture on students’ writing in descriptive text.” is accepted, that is the use of pictures is effective to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text.
