Abstract

The thesis entitled “Adjacency Pairs and Preference Structures in Moana The Movie” proposes to find out (1) the types of Adjacency Pairs in the dialogue of the characters in Moana movie, (2) the way the preference structures are formed in the dialogue of the characters in Moana movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method to collect and analyze the data. To collect the data this study downloaded the movie’s transcript and watched the movie many times. The results showed there were 46 adjacency pairs found in the movie, 20 data about preference structure, and 10 data contain maxim flouting. From the analysis the Question-Answer type of adjacency pairs is the most common type that found in the movie. Meanwhile the preference structure, command-incompliance type was the most occur in the movie. Also, quantity maxim flouting was dominantly utter by the characters of the movie.
