Abstract

Slang is the nonstandard or informal language that is used by almost everyone in informal situation. Slang not only can be found in daily conversation, the use of slang word also found in poetries, songs, novels and movies. This research concerns with the analysis of slang language in Dirty Grandpa the movie, which focused on three main factors that is the word formation of slang, the types of slang and the function of slang. This study used descriptive qualitative design, where the data described the slang word one by one or slang phrase from the movie. The data taken from the movie subtitles and note taking technique was used in collected the data. The data was presented in form of table and the classifications of nonstandard languages was marked into each types (cant, jargon, vernacular, colloquial). Meanwhile, the word formation of slang also described in a column based on their categories. This study used three different theories to answer the research questions. The first question used the theory by Guzman and O’Grady (1996), which is to find out the word formation of slang, for examples bullshit, meatdick, jeez, fuckhead. The second question used the theory by Chapman (1988), which is to find out the types of English slangs, they are primary slang and secondary slang and the third question used the theory by Mattiello (2008) which is to find out the functions of slang used.
