Abstract
Data published by Pusat Bahasa of University of Mataram on February 7th 2022 showed only 25 out of 167 students of English Education Department (EED) could pass the standard score given (500). Septiansyah (2107) and Kholidi (2018) found some items on TOEFL SWE that created difficulties for students such as compound sentence, tenses, word choice, direct object, pronoun, etc. Therefore, researcher was interested to find out the strategies used by the EED students of University of Mataram in answering those items. The purposes of this research were 1) to know whether the 8th semester of EED students had difficulties in answering TOEFL related with compound sentence, tenses, word choice, direct object, and pronoun; and 2) to know the strategies used by the 8th semester of EED students in completing those items. The number of population was 167 of EED students of University of Mataram, but only 42 students of which were chosen purposively to be the sample. The data were collected from students’ result of questionnaire, and interview. The result of questionnaire showed that 1) most of the students had difficulties in answering TOEFL SWE related with tenses, some of which also got problems in completing questions related with compound sentence, and direct object, but they did not face big problem in dealing with TOEFL SWE related with word choice and pronoun; 2) they used some of Phillips’ language skills (2001), grammar translation method, and make a match in dealing with compound sentence, tenses, word choice, direct object, and pronoun.
